Joanna Morton stone, 1818, Plymouth, MA, slate. A very late example of the Plymouth portrait style. Notice how the drapery has been understood in a ornamental rather than a representational manner and how the face reveals the double outline encountered only in ornamental art. A very important shift from a naturalistic style to an ornamental one. Box 1 Bookmark Collection Context Yale University -Robert B. John Lee stone, 1761, Concord, MA, slate. Example of the transition from the provincial baroque style to the ornamental. The volutes, columns, and acantlus-like designs are all derived from the normative forms of the baroque, but have begun to flatten out in the hands of a rural carver.
