Scope and Content:

The George L. Townsend Collection is composed mainly of diaries that document life in Middlebury and Waterbury from 1865-1867. Typical entries include weather, family outings, social outings, masonic lodge meetings, and notes for newspaper articles.

The collection is arranged naturally into two series. Diaries and Scrapbooks (1845-1867) were created by George L. Townsend. Collected Material (1868) was collected after his death.

George Townsend lived in Waterbury, CT during the mid-1800s. He was born in Connecticut around 1828 and died in 1868, according to obituriaes and ancestry records. He wrote about daily life in his diaries.
