Scope and Content:

The collection holds a variety of records and papers transferred from the Town to the Lyme Public Hall (Local History Archives), mainly 19th to mid-20th century for preservation such as registers (draftees, able-bodied men, licenses for physicians, dogs, and bees), overseer and indenture contracts, Connecticut School Fund accounts, interesting property records, legals; orders to the town for a variety of services rendered; minutes for 19th c. school districts and establishment of the library (1914); and photographs. Also includes annual Financial Reports extending from 1885 to the present.

The collection does not provide a complete, running record of any one of the town's departments. It does, however, provide historical background, original examples, and interesting detail on a great many topics and issues of town governance from the 17th century into the 20th century.

Biographical / Historical:

The Town of Lyme Collection holds the materials of four accessions. The first came from a public solicitation for old Annual Town Reports to make a full set since 1880 (1996.001). Three transfers came from the Town of Lyme vault (2008.010, 2014.034, and 2016.037) comprised of documents selected by town officials as no longer needed for governance and service to the town and offered to the Archives. Some items were not directly Town responsibilities but were saved in the Town vault as they signified important religious, cultural, economic, health and safety history in the town.
