      Horace Purdy

(November 11, 1835 - April 2, 1909)

      Horace Purdy was born in Connecticut on November 11, 1835. He lived in Danbury, Connecticut. According to the 1860 census he lived with his wife Ann, and his occupation was recorded as a Hatter. He joined the 1st Regiment Connecticut Infantry Company E as a Private. The 1st Regiment Connecticut infantry began in Washington D.C. in 1861, took part in an Advance on Vienna and Falls Church, Va., from June 1-8 and on Manassas, Va., from July 16-21, they occupied Fairfax C.H. July 17. They also fought in the Battle of Bull Run on July 21. After the war in 1870, Horace still lived in Danbury with his wife Ann and son George L. The 1880 census shows that he lived at 20 Willian Street with his wife and two children; George and Fanny, he now was employed as an insurance agent. In 1880, he was 64 years old and widowed, He had moved down the street to 90 William Street, where he lived with his cousin May C. Dean. Horace died at the age of 73 on April 2, 1906, and is buried in Danbury, Connecticut.
