Scope and Contents

Collection includes one scrapbook of memorabilia and photographs from Blakeslee-Foy's time at the Danbury Normal School. Also included are some loose photographs inserted into the scrapbook.

Memorabilia includes: cocktail napkins, invitations, dance cards, calling cards, programs, a student newspaper ("Dee N Ess"), and some notes.

Biographical / Historical

Mrs. Foy was born in Thomaston, Connecticut in 1910, and was a 1929 graduate of Danbury Normal School. She received her B.S. from Teachers College of Connecticut at New Britain in 1958, and her Master of Education from the University of Hartford in 1961. During World War II she was head of the War Damage Department of The Hartford Insurance Company and after the War and her marriage to Alfred Foy, she returned to teaching.

In her early years, she taught in a one room school in East Morris and a two room school in Northfield and she retired in 1970 after teaching a total of 34 years in public schools. She was a member of the National Education Association, the Connecticut Association for Reading Research, and the International Reading Association. She was a founding organizer of the Litchfield Education Association. A lifelong member of the Northfield (CT) Congregational Church, UCC, she served as Moderator and Deacon, and chaired many committees. For nine years she was a member of the Church and Ministry Committee of Litchfield South Association of the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ. Mrs. Foy also served on the State Board of the Women's Fellowship of the Conference and of Church Women United of Connecticut. She was a member of the Women's Literary Club of Northfield, the Northfield Historical Society, the Embroiderer's Guild of America, a life member of Beacon Grange No. 118, and an associate member of Immanuel Congregational Church, UCC in Hartford.

Davida Blakeslee Foy died at age 89 in 1999 at Avery Heights after a short illness. She was the widow of Alfred Foy and mother of the Rev. Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree, Conference Minister, Connecticut Conference, United Church of Christ.

Abstract

Davida Blakeslee was born in Thomaston, Connecticut in 1910, and was a 1929 graduate of Danbury Normal School. She received her B.S. from Teachers College of Connecticut at New Britain in 1958, and her Master of Education from the University of Hartford in 1961. She taught in public schools for more than 30 years. This collection is comprised of a scrapbook she made as a keepsake for her time at the Danbury Normal School.
