Howard Stevens payment - Common Council Records - 1889

Howard Stevens presented a bill for work he had performed on the fire steamer. The fire committee, despite great contention between Stevens and Chief Meyers, accepted the bill and ordered it paid.

This bill caused great contention between Stevens and Chief Meyers. It was revealed in a hearing regarding the matter that all of the work that had been done by Stevens had not been sanctioned by the chief, and therefore he would not indorse the bill. Stevens' became livid and took out much frustration on Chief Meyers in an inappropriate and personal manner. Stevens was discharged from the volunteer fire department due to his derogatory outbursts aimed at the chief, and despite two hearings on the matter, Stevens was not reinstated.
