Description

3 x 5", postcard

Abstract

On verso: "Look at the grand display of clothing made by F.E. Hartwell & Co. Leading Clothiers and Gents' Furnishers, 163 Main Street, Danbury, Conn." The caption ("me mashee alle samee mellican man") to accompany the image is a racist characterization of a Chinese man making a pass or a "mash" at the passing well-dressed white woman. (OED - 1884 B. Nye. Baled Hay. pg 135, "Two Laramie girls on horseback yanking a fly drummer along the street..because he tried to make a mash on them.") The image was used by various businesses around the U.S. as an advertising backdrop.
