Ben Jonson (1572 – 1637) was an English playwright, poet, and literary critic of the seventeenth century. He is generally regarded as the second most important English dramatist, after William Shakespeare.

William Gifford (1756 – 1826) was an English critic, editor and poet, famous as a satirist and controversialist. As an editor, he played an important role in the revival of  Ben Jonson's reputation after a period of neglect.
