Howze was in the Pine Ridge Campaign ( 1890-1891). For his conduct in a fight with the Brulé Sioux, he was presented with the Medal of Honor. (http://www.history.army.mil/html/moh/indianwars.html). He was also was a Captain of cavalry in the Spanish-American War and later was appointed lieutenant colonel of volunteers during the Philippine Insurrection.
