Regarding collections for the year, reference is made to the
Treasurer's Report.
The exercises on Chi ld ren's Sunday were held in the main
edifice on June 12th, and were of more than usual interest, con tributed mainly by the Primary Department.
Collection for the
Congregational
Publication Society was $13.47.
The exercises of Rally Sunday, October 16th, consisted of
music, remarks by Rev. J. R. Dan forth, R ev. Mr. Williams and
recitat ions by the members of the Primary Department.
The picnic at Richards Grove in the month of September,
was very largely attended not on ly by the main Sunday School,
but by the Bethany Schoo l. The parents a lso attended in large
numbers and enjoyed the program of the day in no less degree
than the ch ildr en.
The C hri stmas entertainment
on Wednesday, _D ecem be r 28,
in the assembly room of the Parish Hou se was especia lly pleasing to th e child ren, the nature of the program being a change
from former years.
The Christmas tr ee in its loftin ess an d
symme tr y, wit h its e laborate decorations was a thing of beauty,
and was admired by the large audience present.
Four pieces
from th e Standard Orchestra was an enj oyab le feature of the
evening.
But the New York Magician gave an hour of prof es sional skill that delight ed the yo un g folk an d highly inter ested
the adult portion of those pr ese nt.
Mr. John Minson, of New York, but forme rl y of\Vaterford,
ha s always be en deeply inter es ted in Sunday School s, es pecially
tho se in thi s vicinity, offers annually a prize of a n O xfor d Bible
to the Sunday School class, a memb er of which brin gs into t h e
school th e lar gest number of new scho lar s during the year.
Such honor thi s year belong s to Mi ss Anna Cr everse r et.
The teacher's m eet ing, on Friday evenings, in preparation
for Sunday work hav e been continued through the yea r , exce pt
during the summer months , with no lack of interest, and with
a steady puqw se to continue the sa me.
It is to be regretted th'at for th e year just closed the figur es
indicate a carelessness in the attendance to an increased degree
•
13
from the year previous exhibited in the record of full classes.
~t is hoped, therefore, that the Superintendent
may have the
support in his purpose to improvise some expedient or expedients which it is believed will change the face of the record for
the better for the year to come. vVhile the attendance of teachers,
a s a whole during the year 1904 has been good, there is room
fo,r improvement,
and it has many times been said that if a
teacher expects to have continued full classes, there is nothing
that will contribute to that end more than the constant attendance of the teacher.
The Sunday School Library since its enlargement with new
c~talogue of its vo lum es is in a very satisfacto ry condition.
The
librarian and assistant lib rarian are faithful in the discharge of
their respective duties.
At this juncture of the report, your attention is especially
It refe rs to the interest in, and support of the Sunday
invoked.
School genera lly.
It is very evident to all observers of Sunday School tendencies that the same methods and expedients in use a quart er of
a_century ago wtll not work as good resu lts at the present tim e .
The _average boy or girl of the present day is not as eas ily drawn
from the hom e or the street, or both, to the Sunday School
room.
Moreover, we must keep in mind that the First Church
of Christ is not now in the vicinity of a residential population ,
but it s edifice and that of the Parish Hou se is rapidly coming
to be a center of the busin ess section of our city, while the
family life is more remote_. As this state of things is year by
year becoming more manife st, it would seem that more aggressive endeavor will be necessary if we expect in some measure to
become progre ss ive. It is hoped, therefore, that the officers of
the Sunday School may be sustained in such efforts and expe dients as they may improvise in their purpose to change things
for the better.
While the common law helps the common school system,
it gives no support or aid to the Sunday School, yet, ho,, ·
essential it is that the spiritual and moral natures be especially
looked after in boys and girls, young men and young women.
Non -church going parents and guardians do not realize the
· importance
of Sunday School instruction
and the salutary
example that is ever present at all of its sessions.
Ho" essential then, that by a paid missionary or a voluntary committee a
movement shall be i nstituted that wi ll bring that class of parents
and g u ardians into closer re lations, to the end that the children
of such shall find their way to the sessions of the Bible School.
A good Secretary is a very important
branch of Sunday
School service, and its Secretary, Mr. C. H. Whittemore
has
discharged its duties with fidelity and entire acceptance during
the year passed.
GEO. F. TINKER,
Sup erintendent.
R eport of the Home Departm ent ,
The Home Department of our Sunday School numbered a
few less than last year. Since the last report was handed in
three of the members have died, one has married and moved
out of town and one has come into the ma in schoo l, and oi:ily
one new member has been added.
The contr ibution of $25.00 has been ·sent to ma intain an
Armenian boy in the Orp hanage at Harpo .ot.

amo ng the children find a fascinating va ri ety from year to year
and from week to week.
Our number s a r e somew h at sma ller than la st -yea r , from
what cause we know no t; possib ly because the teachers have
been unable to make so many ca lls; p_ossibly because we have
cont inu ed to send c lasses up sta ir s at a rather earlier age than
heretofo re; possibl y on account of sickness and severe weather;
18
probably from a combination
of all these reasons.
A new and
interesting order of exercises has been adopted for the department and the aspect of the room has been great ly improved by
a change from the old formal arrangement
of the chairs to the
circular plan of the kindergarten.
The department
has been
carefully classified according to ages, and a definite schedu le of
memory work fixed as a standard for promotion from one class
to another and into the main school.
We g ladly welcome visitors on any Sunday and we invite
suggestions
as to ways of bettering our department,
for we
should like to make it the most profitable and altogether delightful place that could be devised for the little folks.
Will you not pray that God will give us wisdom to guide
the feet of His little ones in the paths that lead to Him?

Chinese Department. - Miss Mary Brainerd, Superintendent.
We feel very much encouraged about the Chinese scholars,
for we see a marked improvement
in them.
There are six regular scholars and others come in now and then.
If all who are
interested in mission work will give these young men encouragement to become good Christians, more good work can be done
in 1905.
The teachers are Miss Mary Brainerd, Miss Thompson,
Mrs. George F. Tinker, Mrs. Henry P. Palmer, Mrs. 0. E. Miner,
Mr s. Hale, Mrs. E. A. Small, Miss Annie C. L earned, Miss
Edwina H. Cunningham.

December 14th marked the close of the Mizpah Circle
act ivities for the year 1904.
During the year the Circle has accomplished
much fo1·
various objects which it has been pleased to consider its privilege
·
to care for .
The .Blake Room and the M izpah R oom at the Memorial
Hospital received the attention and the benefit of our labors in
being supplied with almost an entirely new sup_ply of linen
wh ich was sent to the rooms in Ap ril.
Under the direction of the Circle t he needed renovation s
and repairs at both the Parsonage and Parish House have been
satisfactorily done.
From November 15th to 17th inclusive, during the stay of
the State Convention of Congregational
Churches within ou,·
city, the Mizpah Circle did its part toward making the mission
of these guests both pleasureable and profitable and cont ributed
generous ly to their comfort and welfare.
The successful sale of aprons and a supper given Decemb er
14th added very materially to a sense of feeling that we had
• closed another prosperous year.

Secretary's Report.
It is with pleasure we are able to report progress in our
Society during the year 1904. The Society has a mern bershi p
of 74, of these 14 are honorary, 59 active and one associate.
There ha Ye been four new members added and one from
honorary to active list and three have been placed on the provisional and two from active to honorary li st.
The average attendance has been about 30.
TJ1e Society has as usual conducted meetings at the Almshous e during two months in the year.
In July two of our members were e lected as delegates to the
Silv e r Bay Conference from which most inspiring reports hav e
been heard. This also led to a l\Ii ssion Study Class being
form ed which was wel l attended
and a greater intere st in the
study of mis s ions wa s shown.
\ ,Ye have he ld four bu s in ess meetings
closing with a social
hour.
Three very enjoyable soc ials were also held to whic h the
friends of the Society were invited .
We are looking forward to even greater re sults during 1905.

PASTORAL.
J:J:.$
A second year hns pas sed for u s together.
It has had many
events but nr:, marked crisis.
The reports we bring from various
avenues of work are all" reports of progress."
\Ve cannot say
that anything is finished except the year, and we are glad that it
is so. \Vas not our Saviour the only one who could say of His
"·ork, "It is finished."?
This church has been nt work for two
hundred and sixt y-three years and it s youth and its work are
immortal.
26
The past year has seen an increase in our congregation.
The society has but few pews left for futu:·c applicants.
We gladly welcome those who have come among us and
cordially invite them to add their names, not simply to the roll
of the congregation
but to that of the church as well. In the
Sunday School are some who have reached years in which
admission to the church would seem the natural step to take.
Can we not help them see it in that light?
And then this
ch urch, by reason of its historic r elation in this community
should be the fold of all who are otherwise unchurched.
A
sp irit of cordiality pervades our pews.
Can we not add to it a
larger aggressiveness
that we may "go out into the highways
and hedges to compel them to come in?"
Looking forward toward lar ger work and larger blessing of
the Lord, I am most sincerely your Pastor,
J. ROMEYN DANFORTH.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Woman and the New Race is a book by birth control advocate Margaret Sanger published in 1920. It advocates contraception as the only reasonable means to prevent overpopulation. The book discusses Dr. Thomas Robert Malthus's advocacy of celibacy until middle age to avoid <br />overpopulation, but criticizes the idea as harmful,<br /><br /><br /><br /><br />
Margaret Higgins Sanger (1879-1966) was an American birth control activist, sex educator, and nurse.<span> Sanger popularized the term birth control, opened the first birth control clinic in the United States, and established organizations that evolved into the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Sanger's efforts contributed to several judicial cases that helped legalize contraception in the United States. Sanger is a frequent target of criticism by opponents of birth control and has also been criticized for supporting eugenics, but remains an iconic figure in the American reproductive rights movement.<br /><a title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Sanger" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Sanger">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Sanger</a><br /><br /><br />See her papers at:<br /><br /><a title="http://asteria.fivecolleges.edu/findaids/sophiasmith/mnsss43_main.html" href="http://asteria.fivecolleges.edu/findaids/sophiasmith/mnsss43_main.html">http://asteria.fivecolleges.edu/findaids/sophiasmith/mnsss43_main.html</a><br /></span>

The <em>Well-Tempered Clavie</em>r (German: <em>Das Wohltemperierte</em> <em>Klavier</em>) is a collection of solo keyboard music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. He gave the title to a book of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, dated 1722, composed "for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study." Bach later compiled a second book of the same kind, dated 1742, with the title Twenty-four Preludes and Fugues. The two works are now considered to make up a single work, The Well-Tempered Clavier, or "the 48", and are referred to as The Well-Tempered Clavier Book I and The Well-Tempered Clavier Book II respectively. This collection is generally regarded as being among the most influential works in the history of Western classical music.<br /><br /><a title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Well-Tempered_Clavier" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Well-Tempered_Clavier">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Well-Tempered_Clavier<br /><br /><br /></a>This volume was published by Henry Charles Litolff (1818 - 1891), a piano virtuoso, composer of Romantic music and music publisher. He became a prolific composer, although he is now known mainly as the founder of the Litolff Edition of classical and modern music.<br /><br /><a title="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Litolff" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Litolff">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Litolff</a>

Wheat and soldiers, an impression by W.H. Chamberlin.--Earth and soldiers.--Wheat and soldiers
One of three best selling novels written by the author depicting the daily lives of Japanese soldiers during the Sino-Japanes war. They were originally praised by Japanese popular audiences, but after WWII, the author was purged by the Allied Occcupation for promoting the war through his writing and labeled a "cultural war criminal" by a member of Japan's literary establishment.<br /><br /><a title="http://www.h-net.org/reviews/showrev.php?id=10204" href="http://www.h-net.org/reviews/showrev.php?id=10204">http://www.h-net.org/reviews/showrev.php?id=10204<br /><br />http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashihei_Hino</a>
