We believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven
and earth: and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who
was conceived by the Holy Ghost; born of the Virgin Mary;
suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead, _and
buried: The third day He rose from the dead; He ascended
into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father
Almighty: From thence He shall come to judge the quick
and the dead.
We believe in the Holy Gtost; the holy catholic Church;
the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins;_ the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.
At a meeting held February 25, 1915, the church,
while expressing its adherence to the substance of
the doctrine of the above creed, adopted _the following statement of Christian faith as embodying the
substance of the things most truly believed by it:
Wrbelieve in God, .the Father, infinite in wisdom, goodness,
and love; and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord and Saviour,
who for us and our salvation lived and died and rose again
and liveth evermore; and in the Holy Spirit, who taketh of
the things of Christ and revealeth them to us, renewing,
comforting, and inspiring _the souls of men.
We are united in striving to know the will of God as taught
in the Holy Scriptures, and in our-purpose to walk in the
ways of the Lord, made known or to be made known to us.

The minister, standing at the Lord's Table , shall say ,
What shall I render unto the Lord
For all His ben _efits toward me?
I will take the cup of salvation
And call upon the name of the Lord.
I will pay my vows unto the Lord,
Yea, in the presence of all His people.
The minister shall then read the names of those who are being received by
letter from other churn.es of Christ; and the minister shall say,
Dearly Beloved: Having before made public confession
of your faith in Christ, and having been recommended to
our fellowship by other churches of our common Lord, in
His name we bid you welcome. We greet you as fellow
laborers in His service · and fellow travelers to His promised
rest. \Ve trust that through sympathy with our spirit, and
union with us in all Christian service, you will find in this
church your spiritual home.
May God enable us all to walk together in harmony and
in true holiness; to help one another by word and example
in the faithful performance of our duties toward God l/-nd
toward our fellowmen; and to live as it becometh the Gospel
of Christ, adorning the doctrine of God our Saviour in all
things.
The Lord bless yov and keep you, the Lord make His
face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you; the ·Lord
lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. • Amen.
The minister shall then read the names of those who are being received on
confession of their faith.
These shall · present themselves before him;
and the minister shall say,
Dearly Beloved: Called of God to be His children through
Jesus Christ, our Lord, y ou are here that in the presence of
God and His people you may enter into the communion and
service of His church.

SERVICE
FOR
RECEPTION
OF MEMBERS
Attend, therefore, to the statement of the Christian faith
which is received by this church as embodying the substance
of the things most truly believed by us, in common with the
Church of God throughout the world.
The minister shall here read the following statement of belief:
We believe in God, the Father, infinite in wisdom, goodness,
and love; and in Jesus Christ, His Son, our Lord and Saviour,
who for us and our salvation lived and died and rose again
and liveth evermore; and in the Holy Spirit, who taketh of
the things of Christ and revealeth them to us, renewing,
comforting, and inspiring the souls .of men.
We are united in striving to know the will of God as taught
in the Holy Scriptures, and in our purpose to walk in the ways
of the Lord, made known or to be made known to us .
We hold it to be the mission of the Church of Christ to
proclaim the gospel to all mankind, exa lting the worship of
the one true Gog, and laboring for the progress of knowledge,
the promotion of justice, the triumph of peace, and the
realization of human brotherhood.
Depending, as did our fathers, upon the continued guidance
of the Holy Spirit to lead us into all truth, we work and pray
for the transformation
of the world into the kingdom of
God; and we look with faith for the triumph of righteousness
and the life everlasting.
The minister shall then say,
Having been instructed in this faith and humbly trusting
in the grace of God given unto you, you do now in His sacred
presence and publicly before men confess your faith in the
Lord Jesus Christ, and avow yourselves to be His disciples
forever.
You declare it to be your sincere and solemn purpose to
lead a life of devotedness to God, to give up yourselves to
His guidance, and to strive after conformity to His holy
will. Especially will you study to follow the example and
precepts of our blessed Lord; and you ·will seek by prayer
and diligence in duty to secure the aid and sanctifying
influences of the Holy Spirit.
As members of this church you promise to -conform to its
order and discipline, to promote as far as in you lies, its

edification and purity, and to walk with your brethren m
Christian charity and fidelity.
And you will strive to fulfill all the duties, public and
private, incumbent upon you as members of the whole body
of Christ, by laboring for the spread of the gospel and the
triumph of righteousness throughout the world.
Do you thus believe, profess and engage?
Then shall the sacrament of baptism be administered to such as have not been
baptized .
·
The members of the church shall then rise, and the minister shall say,
We do now solemnly and affectionately receive you to
our communion and to a fellowship with us in the biessings
and service of the gospel; and in the strength of Christ we ·
do promise to walk with you in all helpfulness, brotherly
love and watchfulness , as becometh members of the same
household of faith. God grant that loving and being loved,
serving and being served, blessing and being blessed we may
be prepared, while we dwell together on ear th, for the perfect
communion of the saints in heaven .
Then shall the people be seated, and the minister shall extend the right hand
of fellowship to the new communicants with jilting words of scripture.
The service of admission shall then conclude with the following blessing:
Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead
our Lord Jesus, that Great Shepherd of the sheep, through
the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in
every good work to do His will, working in you that which
is well pleasing in His sight through Jesus Christ, to whom be
glory for ever and ever.
The memntains shall depart and the hills be removed, but
My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the
covenant of My peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath
mercy on you.
The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His
face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you; the Lord
1;ift up His countenance upon you, and give you peace.

Changes in Address. Members
are
earnestly requested, whenever they change
their home addresses, to send immediate
notice in writing to Dr. Voorhees, at the
parsonage, No. 854 Asylum Avenue. Without this co-operation it is exceedingly
difficult to keep our address list up to
date, and it throws an additional burden
upon the Clerk, whose duties now are
sufficiently manifold.
All marriages of members should likewise be promptly reported, in order to
receive mention in the annual report of
the church, issued regularly in March.

Admissions by letter are indicated by an L preceding the
name, those by certificate by a c. Admissions on profession
have no prefix.
Members living in the suburbs of Hartford are included
in the local list. The names of those living at a distance are
given in the list of non-residents,
on pages 39-43. W. H.
means West Hartford.

CONFESSION
OF FAITH.
'
I. You believe in the one only living and true God,
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost; who is a
Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being,
power, knowledge, presence, wisdom, holiness, justice,
. goodness and truth ; that it is the duty of all His intelligent creatures to serve and to worship Him in spirit and
in truth; that He created all things; that He preserves
and governs all His creatures, and overrules all their
actions for His own Glory; and that in whatsoever
comes to pass, He is accomplishing His eternal purposes, according to the Council of His own will, in
such a way that man is a free agent and accountable
for all his actions.
II. You believe that God created man upright; that
our first parents freely sinned and fell, and that all
mankind in a state of nature, and before regeneration
by the Spirit of God, are dead in trespasses and sins,
without holiness and true love to God, and are justly
exposed to all the miseries of this life and to the pains
of hell forever.
6
III. You believe that God in His mercy has uot left
all mankind to perish forever, but out of His mere
good pleasure, has, from all eternity, elected some to
everlasting life; and that He has covenanted to deliver
them from sin and misery, and to ,bring them into a
state of salvation by a Redeemer.
IV. You believe that the only Redeemer of men is
the Lord Jesus Christ, who is very God and very man;
that taking upon Him our nature, He freely suffered
and died on the cross, making atonement for sin ; that
He arose from the dead and ascended into Heaven,
where He ever liveth to make intercession for His
people ; that " there is none other name under Heaven
given among men whereby we must be saved," and
that all who are saved are justified through faith in the
Lord Jesus Christ.
V. You believe that without a change of heart
wrought in the unregenerate, by the special agency of
the Holy Spirit, who is very God, no one can be an heir
of eternal life, and that the soul which is once made
partaker of renewing and saving grace will never be
permitted so to fall away as finally to perish.
VI. You believe that adoption, repentance, justification, sanctification and perseverance, are not bestowed
as the reward of any merit in him who receives them,
but all flow from the free and unmerited Grace of God.
VII. You believe that there will be a general resur-·
7
rection of the righteous and the wicked, and a general
judgment, at which all the righteous will be admitted
to everlasting happiness and all the wicked sentenc,ed
to mis\lry without end.
VIII. You believe that Baptism and the Lord's Supper are the Sacraments of the Kew Testament, and
that Baptism is to be administered to adults upon their
public confession of faith in Christ, and to the children
of visible believe;·s.
IX. Yon believe that the Scriptures of the Old ap.-1
New Testaments a.re given by inspiration of God, and
are the sufficient and only rule of faith and practice.
Thus you sincerely profess and believe.
COVEN ANT.
You do now, in the presence of God, and of this
assemb ly, and, as you hope, with sincerity, dedicate
yourself to God in Christ Jesus, humbly confes sing and
repent ing of your sins.
You do pub li cly acknowl edge and choo~e th e only
living and true· God, to be your God , the Lord J esns,
your Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit, your Sanctifi er.
You covenant and promise that by the st rength of
Divine Grace, you will make it your endeavor to deny
all ungodliness and worldly lusts, and to live soberly,
righteously, and godly, in this pre sent world, hoping
that you have a love of benevolence toward a11 mankind, and intending to do good as you h ave opportun it y, especia lly to those of the household of faith.
You do also covenant with this Chur ch, t h at so long
as yo u continue a member of the same, you will walk
with it in Christi an fellowship ; and in a due att endance on all the institutions of Christ.
Thus in the pr esenc e of God, yo u solemnly co ven ant
and promis e.
(Upon assent by the candidate, here expressed, the
Church rises, while in their name and behalf, the Pastor
says:)
We then, in consequence of these professions and
promises on your part, do affectionately receive you as
members of this Church-and
in the name of Christ,
declare you entit led to all its visible privileges . We
welcome you to this fellowship with us in the blessings
of the Gospel-and on our part engage according to
the opportunity and ability given unto us, to treat you
with Christian affection, watch over you with tender ness, and seek your edification in Christ, so long as you
shall continue among us. And may God enable us to
be mutually faithful to this solemn covenant , through
Jesus Christ our Lord , to whom be glory foreverAmen.
COYEN ANT,
TO BE USED .A.T THE BAPTISM OF CHILDREN".
As a membe_r (or members) of the Ch ur ch of Christ,
professing faith in the doctrines of His word, and r ecognizing His right to you and all you have, you do now
present yourself (or yourselves) before the Lord, to
ded icate this chi ld (or th ese children) to God in the
ord inance of Baptism.
Looking upon this child as an
immortal being, ( or upon these children as immortal
beings,) sta nding in need of the atoning and regenerating grace of God, you engage to make the salvation of
its soul (or their souls) an object of the deepest int erest. You will seek for it (or them) first the Kingdom
of God and His righteousness.
To this end yo u pro mise to teach thi s child (or t hese childre n) to read the
Word of God, t o in stru ct it (or them) in the principles
of our holy religion, as rev ealed in the Scriptures of th e
Old and New Testame nts, to pray for it, (or them,) to
set an example of piet y and godliness before it, (or
them,) and conscientiously endeavor by all the means of
divine appointment, to bring up this child ( or these
children) in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Yo u also engage, both by precept and exa mpl e, to re-
11
strain this child (or these children) from those scenes
or employment s which are injurious to the soul; and
you promise .to pursue that course of Christian instruction and discipline, which your conscience and the
Bil1Ie assure you are best adapted to awaken a just conception for etemal realities, and to bring this child (or
these. children) to an early and saving acquaintance
with the Lord Jesus Christ, and prepare it (or them)
for an endless career of holiness and happiness.
Relying upon the sufficiency of Divine Grace to make
you faithful and to crown your efforts with success,
these things you solemnly promise in the presence of
the Omniscient God and this Church to perform?
