Cândido Mendes de Almeida (1818 – 1881) was a Brazilian lawyer, journalist and politician.

He was representative and senator of the Empire of Brazil (1871–1881). He was decorated with the Order of St. Gregory the Great and the Order of the Rose.[1]

The Universidade Cândido Mendes was named in his honor.

Sir Frederick Maurice Powicke (16 June 1879 – 19 May 1963) was an English historian, whose primary interest was in medieval history. He was a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford, a professor at Belfast and Manchester, and from 1928 until his retirement Regius Professor at Oxford. He was knighted in 1946.
