Description
An account of the resource
10 x 5" wood and gourd (pipe); 8 x 4" wood (vessle); 16 x 8" hemp (bag)
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
The pipe and vessel most closely resemble examples from the Kuba people around modern-day D.R.C. and the bag may not be related to the pipe and vessel but were kept inside the bag. The pipe has carved wooden heads at the mouthpiece and protruding from the sides of the gourd; the bowl and head carvings are attached to the gourd with wire and made air-tight with tar. The lidded vessel has surface carvings, a handle, carved figures (on handle and lid) and a tight-fitting lid - similar to tobacco and hemp containers; it contains a red dusty residue.

An account of the resource
23 x 10", wood, hide and string
Abstract
A summary of the resource.
This example most resembles examples from Guinea-Bissau and southern Senegal. The strings maintain tension between the two drum heads on either side of the tubular body; tightening the tension cords raises the pitch of the drum heads. Damaged, with several tension cords being snapped and with one drumhead loosening from its base. The mallet is a carved piece of wood specifically made to strike the drum.
