Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Item in good condition.
Émile Henri Bernard was a French Post-Impressionist painter and writer, who had artistic friendships with Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Eugène Boch. Less known is Bernard's literary work, comprising plays, poetry, and art criticism as well as art historical statements that contain first-hand information on the crucial period of modern art to which Bernard had contributed. Émile Henri Bernard was born in Lille, France in 1868. He stayed with his grandmother, who was one of the greatest supporters of his art. He began his studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs. In 1884, joined the Atelier Cormon where he experimented with impressionism and pointillism. In 1893 he started traveling, to Egypt, Spain, and Italy and after that, his style became more eclectic. He returned to Paris in 1904 and remained there for the remainder of his life. He taught at the École des Beaux-Arts before he died in 1941.

Leonard Baskin was a prize-winning American sculptor, draughtsman and graphic artist, as well as founder of the Gehenna Press. One of America's first fine arts presses, it went on to become "one of the most important and comprehensive art presses of the world." Called a "Sculptor of Stark Memorials" by the New York Times, Baskin is also known for his wood, limestone, bronze, and large-scale woodblock prints, which ranged from naturalistic to fanciful, and were frequently grotesque, featuring bloated figures or humans merging with animals.

Abstract
A summary of the resource.
Item in good condition.
Original etching with plate tone created by Sigmund Abeles, "Curled Up" is an 'Artist Proof' impression printed by Robert Townsend, Amherst, Massachusetts in 1981. This etching was created in 1981; the year Sigmund Abeles, and nine other American printmakers were invited to the University of Massachusetts for a two-week period. Although this striking etching of a nude figure study is untitled, in a conversation with Sigmund Abeles, the artist provided the title, "Curled Up". Of this work, Sigmund Abeles comments "Curled Up, a simple, even cozy figure that was made during my U Mass Amherst visiting artist stint. Again scratched directly onto the plate, working to make each line touch the form."
Sigmund Abeles is an American figurative artist and art educator. His work embodies the "expressive and psychological aspects of the human figure; an art focused on the life cycle." He taught art for 27 years at various institutions including Swain School of Design, Wellesley College, Boston University, the National Academy, and the Art Students League of New York. Currently Professor Emeritus at the University of New Hampshire, Abeles works full-time in his NYC and upstate NY studios. He is the recipient of numerous grants and awards for printmaking, drawing, painting, and sculpture. Born in Brooklyn, New York City, Abeles grew up in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. During his high school years, Sigmund was mentored by Truman Moore Sr., a wood sculptor, who pointed him towards the Boston artist Gerard Francis Tempest whom he later apprenticed with. Abeles attended the University of South Carolina, initially for pre-medical studies to appease his mother but he later switched to art studies.
